Our Lord meets the funeral procession at the gate of the town. Nobody sends for him and nobody asks him for anything.

He sees the widow, and the Gospel says he had compassion on her. The word comes before the miracle. Whatever we are asked to do for the bereaved in this parish begins there — with going out to meet them at the gate.
